58mm Filter Adapter for CANON PowerShot Review

This adapter works very well on my SX20is. Very snug fit. Stays in place well when changing filters. Really expands the capabilities of a great camera. I'm a photojournalist by trade, but my passion is shooting candid snapshots. The SX20 lends itself to that very well. And now I can shoot the landscapes with a nice polarizing filter, leave a UV1 on to protect my lens, and any other 58mm filter for making good shots great. I bought the SX20 because it has a long enough zoom for most apps and I don't need to carry extra lenses. It also has a hot shoe for camera mounted flash. But no threads for filters. This adapter really opened up a lot of photo opportunities for home and pro use. I highly recommend this item!!

Surprise - 70-300mm Canon Lens is Much Better Than Expected

I love surprises, especially if they are like finding a golden nugget where you thought there was junk.

The 70-300mm Canon lens (not the DO model) is just such a surprise.

In fact, it could be the best kept secret among photographers. You rarely hear anyone proclaiming the greatness of this little lens. The lens is too unassuming and ordinary. And yet, when you look deep, you see the subtle praises.

Maybe it's because the lens is not impressive to look at, and "real" photographers want an attention-getter on the front of their prized digital SLR.

Maybe it's because it isn't all that expensive, coming in at about $550.

No matter the reason, the 70-300mm Canon lens is well worth taking a look at.

Image quality is ranked by some well respected photographers right up there with the L lens, and that is impressive.

What you will generally see on blogs and forums is how unpretentious the lens actually is. Comments like, "I thought it was a toy," express the first impressions of many first-time users.

However, the first impressions are not lasting ones with this lens. Once they shoot a few frames, their opinion changes. After all, the lens sports IS (image stabilization) and USM (ultrasonic motor), along with the great image quality already mentioned. Those who disdain the use of a tripod will like these two features.

My favorite story about the 70-300mm Canon lens comes from a guy who found his lens at a garage sale. Picking it up, he figured he would buy it for a young relative who was just getting started in photography. The seller knew nothing about the performance of the lens. So, the photographer buys the lens.

Just to see if it even works, he puts it on his Canon 5D to take a few shots. The relative never got the lens. This buyer was so impressed with its performance, he stated that it was too good of a lens to waste on someone else.

A Family Photoblog For the New Year

My family has gone nuts over photography. As parents we have enabled this behavior by purchasing our daughters cameras. They love to take photos of people they know, places they go and things they do. My oldest is never without her camera. She has a Canon Powershot SX10 IS. Not to be outdone, my youngest daughter has a Powershot SD series camera. Dad has a Canon Rebel T1i and mom also has a Rebel Digital. With all this photography equipment we thought it would be a shame to allow an opportunity to take photos to go to waste.

The oldest does not need a excuse to take photos. She is always taking a photo to update her Facebook. She and her friends are crazy about sharing photos. The youngest goes in spurts. Mom and dad simply needs to find time. So the idea was to set up a photoblog which would give everyone a goal to meet each day.

We went to WordPress.com and set up a free blog. It is easy enough to update and upload the latest photographs. We simply write a blurb about what the photograph was about and then post the photo. It could not be easier.

The oldest likes to take creative photos. She really pushes her imagination in interesting ways. The things she sees and her ideas are quite inspiring. The youngest likes to take photos of goofy things like the dog or guinea pigs. Mom loves to take photos of the stuff she cooks or creates. Dad likes to take photos of the outdoors, mixing interesting textures and viewpoints.

We hope to be able to keep photoblogging throughout the year. It will be very interesting to look back in a few months to see what we blogged about. Personally my hope is to improve each day/month/week in taking better photos. I can say for sure that the extended family all over the country already find it fascinating to see what we are going to post next. They think it is a great idea. I think every family could find value in this kind of blogging.

The Canon PowerShot SX20 IS is definitely a step up from a point-and-shot and a step down from an SLR with changable lenses. Its size is convenient for the image control you get. Its image control (exposure, focus, close-ups) is excellent. It even takes movies. I strongly recommend purchasing a User's Guide to get the most out of all of its features. I got "A Short Course In Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Photography" manual that I really like. The documentation that comes with the camera is limited and mostly online. Note that this camera does not come with a memory card. I got some SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 4GB memory cards for it that work great.
